Dog days of summer

Last weekend I was running some errands. When you live in the middle of nowhere like I do, this means driving 40 minutes to Walmart (unless you want to shop at a gas station or drive over an hour). Anyway, as I walked to the store entrance I saw that the Pike County Humane Society outside with an adoption event, which is like a siren call to me.

There was a little chubby dog, Gracie, who appealed to me. I spent some time with her and decided to go for it. I even went as far as buying small-dog supplies in Walmart.  When I went back outside, I told them I was ready to adopt her! As I started filling out the application, one of the volunteers mentioned that Gracie wasn't housebroken. I didn't want to keep her in a crate all day and felt that maybe it wasn't the perfect fit I had originally anticipated, so it was kind of a dealbreaker.

Gracie. She was adopted less than a week later, which makes me happy.
Anyway, that "close call" made me realize that it was time to get serious about adopting a dog. So I drove to the actual shelter.

And that's where I met Bella!

The volunteers there are always amazing. One was showing me another dog when I walked past Bella's kennel and she caught my eye. Normally I like smaller dogs and/or dogs with longer hair. But this one stole my heart.

Allison and I have been very cautious about choosing the right dog - we need one that will get along with cats, kids, and other dogs. Bella fits all those requirements, plus she seems happy to sit around cuddling or to take a walk. Basically she is the best dog ever.

The only reason I don't have her in my house this very second is because her original owners didn't neuter her and she was in heat when I met her last weekend. Once THAT is over, she can be spayed and I will take her to her forever home.

I went back again today to visit and bond with her some more. She didn't seem interested in playing with the dog toy I brought but she was VERY interested in the treats!

"I can has doggie treats?"
Next weekend I'm going to visit the shelter again and see if they have a date set for Bella's spaying. Hopefully Allison will be back from her conference and I can drag her along, too.

So that's the latest news!
